Tiny Finger Hats

Thimbles. What are they?

Most people have seen a thimble at one time or another. They are small. They go on your finger. One might ask: why? That is a good question. A thimble protects the finger from a needle. Needles are sharp. This is something most residents of Moose County already know, but I feel it is my duty to remind them.

Koko has been knocking thimbles off the shelf in the library at the apple barn all week. At first I dismissed this as ordinary feline mischief, but then my moustache began to tingle. Koko does nothing without reason. He once predicted the stock market crash of a small regional bank simply by sitting on a particular volume of the encyclopedia. When a Siamese of his caliber repeatedly swats a thimble onto the floor, one pays attention. Yum Yum, meanwhile, has stolen three of them and hidden them in my bedroom slippers. What does it mean? I am still working on that.

It is worth noting that Pickax has seen four thimble-related incidents this year alone, including one suspicious fire at a quilting shop and the unsolved disappearance of Euphonia Spratt’s antique thimble collection. For a town of three thousand, this seems like a lot. But who am I to say? Things happen in Pickax. They always have. Particularly, I have noticed, since I arrived from Down Below, though I am sure that is purely coincidental.

I recently considered purchasing a thimble display case as a K Fund write-off for cultural preservation. My accountant agreed this was perfectly reasonable. However, I was appalled to discover that a decent display case costs upward of forty dollars. Forty dollars! For wood and glass! I mentioned this to Polly over dinner—her dinner, which she cooked, saving me the expense—and she suggested I build one myself. I will not be doing that.

Have thimbles changed the world? Probably not. Do we need them? Some say yes. Are there people in Moose County who collect them? Apparently so, and at great personal risk, given recent events. Should I write more about this subject? My moustache says no.

Thimbles.
